- The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) is a degree of advanced levels of scholarship and research. It can be earned with an emphasis in Musicology/Ethnomusicology or Music Education.
- The Doctor of Philosophy in Music with an emphasis in Musicology/Ethnomusicology recognizes the development of advanced levels of scholarship and techniques of music analysis, intellectual awareness and curiosity sufficient to assure continued scholarly growth and the systematic contribution to the body of knowledge, depth of knowledge in music generally, writing and speaking skills sufficient to ensure effective communication with other scholars, colleagues, and practitioners within the discipline and community, and understanding and application of advanced research methodology appropriate to the field as well as the discipline as a whole. The degree is research oriented and prepares students for the roles of teaching and research in higher education.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement
- Required in addition to submit TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) scores or the IELTS.
- An applicant may be admitted as a prospective candidate for the Doctor of Philosophy degree upon certification by the major department that he or she is a person of proper attainment and promise, that appropriate courses may be adequately given, and that the student’s research can be adequately supported and directed. Such admission must be to an authorized field and must be approved by the dean of the Graduate School.
- Persons holding a baccalaureate degree, or a foreign equivalent, from a regionally accredited institution are eligible to apply for admission to the Graduate School.
