Question: If 4x + y = 8 and y – 3x = 7, then what is the value of x + 2y?

  1. \(\frac{1}{7}\)
  2. 3
  3. 15
  4. \(\frac{52}{7}\)
  5. \(\frac{60}{7}\)

Answer:
Solution with Explanation:
Approach Solution (1):

We will make the equations as:

4x + y = 8 … (equation 1)
-3x + y = 7 … (equation 2)

Adding both the equations, we will get:

4x + y – 3x + y = 8 + 7
x + 2y = 15

Correct Option: C

Approach Solution (2):

The equations formed after understanding the question will be:

4p + q = 8 … (1)
-3p + q = 7 … (2)

Add both the equations:

4p + q – 3p + q = 8 + 7
p + 2q = 15

Correct Option: C

Approach Solution (3):

Given: 4x + y = 8
y - 3x = 7
From the above the equations, we can see that:
4x + y = 8
-3x + y = 7
Equating both the equations
x + 2y = 8 + 7 = 15

Correct Option: C
