The Rhodes Trust opened the 2027 India scholarship cycle on June 1, 2026. Five fully funded slots send Indian graduates to Oxford on the award. The official Rhodes India page locks the deadline at 23:59 IST on July 23, 2026. Each scholarship covers full Oxford fees plus a £20,400 yearly living stipend.

  • Five Rhodes Scholarships are ring-fenced for India in the 2027 cycle, with the same quota every year.
  • The award clears Oxford tuition and pays a £20,400 annual stipend, the UK visa fee, the health surcharge and two economy flights.
  • Indian citizens aged 18 to 23 on October 1, 2026 qualify, provided they studied in India for four of the last ten years.

The Rhodes is the oldest international postgraduate award. It routes Indian first-class graduates into Oxford DPhil, MPhil and MSc programmes. Selection runs through a written file, a shortlist and an in-person interview in Delhi later this year.

What the Rhodes Scholarship 2027 Pays For

The Rhodes is a fully funded award for the duration of study. It clears every Oxford fee and adds a monthly stipend that the scholar uses for rent, food and travel inside the UK.

Cost headCoverage in the 2027 cycle
Oxford course feesPaid in full for the chosen degree
Living stipend£20,400 per year, paid as £1,700 per month
UK student visa feeReimbursed by the Rhodes Trust
Immigration Health SurchargeCovers NHS access for the study period
FlightsTwo economy tickets, at the start and end of study
Settling-in grantPaid as a lump sum on arrival in Oxford

The stipend alone works out to ?25.9 lakh a year at ?127 per GBP, June 2026. That is roughly ?2.16 lakh a month for living costs. Oxford’s published international fee for many one-year taught masters sits above £35,000, so the combined package crosses £55,000, or close to ?70 lakh per scholar per year.

What it means for Indian Students: A self-funded one-year Oxford MSc usually requires an education loan of ?60 to 70 lakh. The Rhodes wipes that loan and adds a living stipend on top, so the scholar does not need part-time work in the UK.

Who Can Apply for Rhodes Scholarship 2027?

The Rhodes India committee runs four hard tests. Each is checked before the file enters the shortlist queue.

  • Citizenship: The applicant must hold a valid Indian passport at the time of applying.
  • Age: Candidates must be aged 18 to 23 on October 1, 2026. The cut-off is fixed.
  • Education in India: At least four of the last ten years of school or college must sit inside India.
  • Academic standing: A first-class undergraduate degree is required by October 2027.

The selection panel weighs four traits set out by Cecil Rhodes himself. These are literary and academic ability, energy shown in sport or other pursuits, truth and courage of character, and instincts to lead. The Rhodes Trust charges no application fee.

How Do Indian Students Apply by July 23?

The full process runs online through the Rhodes Trust portal. There is no paper route, and late uploads lock automatically at the deadline.

  1. Register on the Rhodes India application portal and start the form well before July.
  2. Upload a personal statement, an academic CV, a passport copy and academic transcripts.
  3. Nominate at least five referees and brief them on the deadline early.
  4. Submit the application before 23:59 IST on July 23, 2026.
  5. Ensure every referee uploads their letter before August 6, 2026, since late references disqualify the file.

Important Note: The Rhodes file is separate from the Oxford course application. A Rhodes scholar still has to win an Oxford place on its own track, with most Oxford masters deadlines falling between December 2026 and January 2027. Begin both files at the same time.

Selection Timeline and India Interview Window

The India selection runs in two stages. A shortlist is published in September or October 2026. Final panel interviews follow in November or early December 2026, held in person in Delhi.

Final scholars are announced before Christmas. They join Oxford in the Michaelmas term of October 2027. Dr Dhvani Mehta is the National Secretary for India. Queries are routed through india.secretary@rhodestrust.com.

The committee reimburses travel for the final interview. Recent Indian cohorts have included strong public-university files alongside private-college applicants, as the three Delhi University students selected in the Rhodes 2023 cycle showed. The committee does not weight the brand of the home institution.

The Rhodes window for India closes inside five weeks. Indian graduates targeting Oxford in October 2027 have until 23:59 IST on July 23, 2026 to submit the file. Referees have until August 6, 2026 to upload their letters. The next India cycle opens only in June 2027.

Action Plan for the 2027 India Cycle

  1. Confirm passport validity through at least October 2028.
  2. Lock the personal statement and CV by the first week of July 2026.
  3. Brief all five referees with the August 6 deadline by early July.
  4. Submit the application on the portal by July 20, leaving a three-day buffer.
  5. Track every referee upload until the August 6 close.

Keep an Eye On: The August 6, 2026 referee deadline is the final lock for the 2027 India cycle. Shortlists are due next in September or October 2026, ahead of in-person Delhi interviews in November.
